SportsScope : Bruin, Wave Spikers to Collide in Kilgour Cup

The UCLA men’s volleyball team, third-ranked nationally, will play host to No. 6 Pepperdine in the 12th annual Kilgour Cup at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Pauley Pavilion.

The match, sponsored by the Maccabi Union, is a benefit for former UCLA All-American Kirk Kilgour, whose spinal cord was severed in a 1976 training accident, confining him to a wheelchair. He will be color commentator for the match, which will be televised on Prime Ticket.

In last week’s 24-team UC Santa Barbara Collegiate Tournament, the Waves won seven matches and lost one (to Hawaii) and defeated UCLA in three games to take third place. The Bruins were 5-1 in the tourney, won by No. 2 Hawaii. Calgary finished second.

Pepperdine senior setter Jamie Smith, who sprained an ankle against UCLA, was named to the all-tournament team.

The UCLA women’s basketball team, 6-7 overall and 2-1 in Pacific 10 Conference play, will entertain Arizona State (7-7, 1-4) at 7 p.m. Friday and Arizona (5-9, 0-4) at 7 p.m. Saturday at John Wooden Center.

Last week the Bruins, who have won three of their last four games, defeated Southern Utah State, 79-51, and USC, 76-62. It was UCLA’s first victory over the Trojans in their last six meetings.

Bruin leaders are freshman center Molly Tideback, who is averaging 13.5 points a game, and senior forward Althea Ford, who is averaging 6.6 rebounds. Ford had 17 points and 10 rebounds against USC.

The Pepperdine women’s basketball team, 6-10 overall and 1-1 in the West Coast Athletic Conference, will play Portland (3-12, 1-1) at 7:30 p.m. Friday and to Gonzaga (6-10, 2-0) at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Firestone Fieldhouse.

Last week the Waves opened conference play on the road, losing to Santa Clara, 61-58, but defeating the University of San Francisco, 80-70. Against USF, Pepperdine made all of its 27 free throws.

On the trip, junior guard Kristy Greenberg scored 33 points on 13-of-18 shooting, made all of her three three-point shots and all of her free throws and handed out eight assists.

Pepperdine junior forward April Marion is averaging the team-high 14.2 points and 8.5 rebounds.

The Santa Monica College men’s basketball team, which has won eight straight games and was ranked third in the state last week, will play at 7 p.m. Saturday at Cuesta (2-17 overall and 0-4 in the Western State Conference Northern Division).

Last week the Corsairs (20-3 and 5-0 in the WSC Southern Division) defeated West Los Angeles, 75-51; College of the Canyons, 88-69, and Bakersfield, 83-62. In SMC home games, Kemo Patrick scored 16 points against WLAC and had 16 points and 13 rebounds against Canyons. Keith Amerson scored 22 against Canyons. At Bakersfield, Von Shuler had 22 points, including three three-point shots, and DeShawn Pullard made four three-pointers and finished with 19 points.

The Santa Monica College women’s basketball team (15-4 overall and 4-0 in WSC play) will play at at 5 p.m. Saturday at Cuesta (5-11, 0-4).

Last week SMC defeated Canyons, 75-50, at home and won at Bakersfield, 70-67. LaVern Moore, Corsair sophomore forward, scored 47 points and had 19 rebounds in the two games.

The UCLA women’s gymnastics team, which opened the season by winning a triangular meet with Minnesota and UC Santa Barbara last week, will compete Friday at Arizona.

The Bruins scored 187.4 points in their season opener, tying a Wooden Center record they had set in last year’s opener. Minnesota scored 177.4 and Santa Barbara 170.8. UCLA junior Jill Andrews set a center record with a 9.75 on the vault.

UCLA junior swimmer Mark Dean, a member of the 1988 U.S. Olympic team, qualified for the NCAA meet by posting a 1:47.25 in the 200-yard butterfly.

Dean made his mark as the No. 4 Bruins (6-0 and 2-0 in Pac-10 meets) swamped Arizona State, 105-35. UCLA also defeated Arizona, 89-24, last week.

The UCLA women’s swim team (7-0 and 2-0 in Pac-10 action) also had an easy time last week against the Arizona schools, defeating Arizona State, 93-47, and the Wildcats, 99-41. In each meet, Bruin senior Jenny Susser was a double winner in the 50-yard and 100 freestyles.

UCLA will be at Stanford on Friday and at California on Saturday.

The Pepperdine women’s swim team, which improved to 4-3 last week with a 173-36 rout of Loyola Marymount, will play host to USC and Claremont Mudd at 3 p.m. Jan. 27 at Raleigh Runnels Memorial Pool.

Against LMU, senior Chris Carrauthers was Pepperdine’s only double winner. She took the 50-yard freestyle in 25.91 and the 100 butterfly in 1:03.06. The Waves won 14 events, losing only the 100 and 200 backstrokes.

The nationally top-ranked UCLA men’s tennis team, which has five All-Americans, will begin dual matches when it plays host to San Diego State at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Los Angeles Tennis Center on campus.

The No. 3 UCLA women’s tennis team will open dual-match play by entertaining Utah at 1 p.m. Sunday at UCLA’s Sunset Canyon courts. The Bruins are led by sophomore Kirsten Dreyer, ranked seventh in the nation in singles.

The No. 9 Pepperdine women’s tennis team will begin its dual-match schedule when it plays host to Utah at 1:30 p.m. Saturday.

All-Americans Ginger Helgeson, a junior, and Janna Kovacevich, a sophomore, return for the Waves. Other veterans include sophomore Anna Brunstrom of Sweden, junior Carrie Crisell, sophomore Julie Gaiser and freshman Kristen Chang.

Freshman include Noelle Porter, highly ranked among U.S. junior players, and Camilla Ohrman, one of Sweden’s top players.

The UCLA women’s golf team, which hasn’t competed since finishing eighth at last November’s UCLA invitational, will be in Guadalajara, Mexico, on Friday and Saturday for the Oklahoma State Invitational.

Michael Moore, a 6-4, 190-pound wide receiver from Beverly Hills High, has verbally committed to attend UCLA in the fall. Moore, whose uncle is former Minnesota Vikings receiver Ahmad Rashad, chose the Bruins over USC, Cal, Stanford and Washington.

The first day high school seniors may sign letters of intent is Feb. 8.
