Demetrius Brown, the quarterback who led Michigan to victory over USC in the Rose Bowl, grew up in the Overtown section of Miami, which erupted into rioting this week.

“It wasn’t a slum, but you won’t ever find it on ‘Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous,’ ” Brown said.

When Michigan Coach Bo Schembechler made a recruiting visit, Brown escorted Schembechler.

“I didn’t want to go in alone,” Schembechler said. “They lived in an apartment building that looked like it used to be a motel. It’s around the area where those Cuban refugees are living under the bridges. It was a tough neighborhood. When I looked around I didn’t see a lot of lily-white guys.”
