Fashion 89 : PARTY SCENE : EAST & WEST

Two main events in the same week, on opposite coasts, proved that party plumage in Los Angeles and New York looks much the same these days.

Just about every big name in Manhattan’s fashion industry attended the gala of the Council of Fashion Designers of America at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The dominant style was glittery but understated, with many guests--including TV’s Barbara Walters and designer Donna Karan--opting for ornately embroidered jackets over long, simple dresses.

In Los Angeles too, anything simple looked chic at Fred Hayman’s Universal Studios party to launch his new shop name and his 273 fragrance. Adolfo’s brown chiffon (worn by Rosemary Stack), Valentino’s tapestry top and slim gray skirt (worn by Torie Steele), Oscar de la Renta’s black taffeta dress (worn by Jill Ireland), Fabrice’s white taffeta (worn by Loretta Swit) and David Hayes’ fitted, floor-length evening separates (worn by Claudia Christian) would look at home in any major city of the world.
