A speeding driver who caused a major accident near Ramona that killed two people was sentenced Friday to two years in County Jail.

Arnold Bundy, 36, of San Diego, also received a suspended three-year state prison term, which the judge warned he might have to serve if he violates the terms of his five-year probation.

Bundy pleaded guilty Nov. 21 to two counts of misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter and felony hit and run.

The Aug. 17 crash on a winding section of Highway 67 claimed the lives of a brother and sister, Delfino Aguilar, 41, and Maria Mendez, 38. Eleven others, mostly children, suffered injuries.

Bundy is believed to have swerved into oncoming traffic on a narrow, curved section of the highway, causing another car to strike a van carrying 11 members of two related families from El Cajon.

He was arrested 20 hours after the fatal head-on collision. San Diego Superior Court Judge Milton Milkes said Bundy had been driving 75 m.p.h. and had just come from a hearing at the El Cajon courthouse on a traffic matter.

Bundy has a previous conviction for reckless driving, the judge said. The judge noted that Bundy expressed sorrow over the accident but said “sorry comes too late.”
