Thompson’s Walkout Does Not Generate a Great Deal of Support
The actions taken by John Thompson, Georgetown University basketball coach, in boycotting the games, plus his remarks about the NCAA scholastic requirements for recruits are deplorable.
Young people, particularly the underprivileged, need an incentive to study and to obtain a fundamental education. Life is more than basketball and young people must be prepared to handle it after basketball.
The actions of Thompson reveal the real reason for basketball at many universities--that of making money. The education of the recruits is secondary. Thompson puts a premium on stupidity.
