Duck Hunting in San Joaquin Marsh

Share

I have been following a story regarding duck hunting in the San Joaquin Marsh (adjacent to UC Irvine).

Across the street from the marsh, at UCI, the use of live animals in teaching or research must be presented in the form of a formal protocol for review by a committee composed in accordance with federal law. Part of that committee’s review consists of addressing potential pain and discomfort to animals as well as assuring that the humane methods of euthanasia are utilized.

So, are the ducks killed with the first shot? Or are they simply wounded? Are the wounded birds found and humanely killed or are they left to die from their wounds? Most importantly, why are they hunted? Certainly not for food. Is killing for sport really justifiable?

I would think the Irvine Ranch Water District and the university would do everything in their power to identify funds to maintain the marsh and not depend on funds provided by hunting clubs. I would also expect both to strongly discourage sport hunting and the senseless killing of animals.
