College Roundup : Fullerton Hands Game to Long Beach

The Cal State Long Beach women’s basketball team, taking advantage of 43 turnovers, defeated Cal State Fullerton, 84-50, in a Big West game Saturday night at Long Beach.

The Titans had 28 turnovers in the first half while falling behind, 55-25.

Long Beach, ranked 10th in the nation, is 12-4, 6-0 in conference play. Fullerton fell to 12-4 and 4-3.

Shameil Coleman was the 49er women’s leading scorer for the third consecutive game with 15 points. Traci Waites added 13.

Gena Miller, who fouled out with 2:41 left, led Fullerton with 19 points.

In the California Collegiate Athletic Assn.:

Chapman 71, UC Riverside 64--Julie King scored 22 points for host Chapman (7-9, 2-1). Kim Rieff added 18. Patti Held scored 27 points for Riverside.

In a nonconference game:

The Masters 54, Southern California College 49--Laurel Hudgens’ two free throws in the final second clinched the victory after Southern California College’s Roxanne Trost made a 3-point basket to cut the margin to three points. Gail Brown and Stacey Mounce led Southern California College (4-14) with 10 points each.

In women’s tennis:

Fresno State 6, Cal State Fullerton 3--Fullerton’s No. 4 singles player, Caroline Sporer, defeated Tara Eden, 4-6, 7-6 (11-9) 6-4, in the Big West Conference opener for both teams. Katy McKenzie, at No. 6 singles defeated Grace Schreuders, 6-3, 2-6, 6-1. The No. 2 doubles team of Kelli Moore and Sporer defeated Fresno State’s Valerie Stukovsky and Tara Eden, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3.

In men’s swimming: UC Irvine 169, Cal State Northridge 62--The host Anteaters swept the relays, winning the 400-meter medley in 3 minutes 35.85 seconds and the 400-meter freestyle in 3:11.39, in a nonconference victory in Crawford Hall Pool.

Irvine’s Mauro Macchi was a double winner, placing first in the 1,000-meter freestyle (10:07.93) and the 500-meter freestyle (4:46.63). Matt Wright won the 50-meter freestyle (21.96) and the 100-meter freestyle (47.54) for Irvine (6-1).

In women’s swimming:

Cal State Northridge 140, UC Irvine 93--Devon Coate won the 200-meter individual medley in 2:13.03 and the 200-meter backstroke in 2:14.13 for Irvine (3-5).

In wrestling:

Cleveland State 26, Cal State Fullerton 13--The 25th-ranked Titans lost 8 of 10 matches against No. 26 Cleveland State in a nonconference meet in Ohio. Fullerton’s David Jones, the No. 5-ranked heavyweight in the nation, pinned Cleveland’s Heath Mohrman at 1:40. Jones, who leads the team in pins with 7, improved his record to 21-3-2.

Erin Millsap also won for the Titans, scoring a technical fall, 21-5, over Mile Elsass at 118 pounds. Millsap is 22-4-2. Fullerton is 8-6 in dual meets.
