‘Stand and Deliver’ Wins Seven Spirit Award Nominations

With seven nominations, “Stand and Deliver” leads the list of films eligible for the fourth annual Independent Spirit awards given by Independent Feature Project/West.

The nonprofit association of independent film makers will present the awards March 25 with Buck Henry as master of ceremonies at the Blossom Room of the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel, site of the first Academy Awards.

Other films up for honors include John Waters’ nostalgic comedy “Hairspray” (6 nominations), the scathing sexual satire “Patti Rocks” (5) and, with 3 nominations each, Oliver Stone’s “Talk Radio” and Alan Rudolph’s “The Moderns.”

Best feature: “Hairspray,” “Patti Rocks,” “Stand and Deliver,” “The Thin Blue Line,” “Torch Song Trilogy.”

Best first feature: “Border Radio,” “Mystic Pizza,” “Prince of Pennsylvania,” “The Chocolate War,” “The Wash.”

Best director: Ramon Menendez (“Stand and Deliver”), David Burton Morris (“Patti Rocks”), Errol Morris (“Thin Blue Line”), Oliver Stone (“Talk Radio”).

Best screenplay: Ramon Menendez, Tom Musca (“Stand and Deliver”); David Burton Morris, Chris Mulkey, John Jenkins, Karen Landry (“Patti Rocks”), Alan Rudolph, Jon Bradshaw “The Moderns”), John Patrick Shanley (“Five Corners”), John Waters (“Hairspray”).

Best actor: Eric Bogosian (“Talk Radio”), Harvey Fierstein (“Torch Song Trilogy”), Chris Mulkey (“Patti Rocks”), Edward James Olmos (“Stand and Deliver”), James Woods (“The Boost”).
