Texas football coach David McWilliams, looking for the right formula after a 4-7 season, fired two assistants today and reassigned offensive coordinator John Mize, who was criticized often for his play-calling in 1988.

The changes came just more than a week after defensive coordinator Paul Jette resigned and former Colorado State head coach Leon Fuller was hired to replace him.

Jette was charged with unethical conduct in the NCAA’s sanctions against Oklahoma State, where he coached in 1979-84.

Along with Mize’s reassignment, McWilliams dismissed defensive tackle coach Bill Hicks and tight end and special teams coach Bryant Pool.

“I felt like it was in the best interest of the program to make the changes,” McWilliams said at a news conference. “I felt like maybe it was a difference of philosophies.”

Mize drew widespread criticism, especially on two key plays in losses to Texas Tech and Texas A&M;, and there had been speculation that McWilliams would let him go.
