Left-handed pitcher Jim Abbott, the Angels’ No. 1 draft choice last year, has been invited to spring training with the team.

Abbott was one of eight non-roster players to get such an invitation. Pitchers and catchers report to Mesa, Ariz. on Feb. 16.

Abbott is on the Angels’ Class AA roster and is scheduled to begin as a professional at Midland of the Texas League. He delayed his pro career last year to help pitch the United States to an Olympic gold medal in Seoul, South Korea.

The Angels also announced that Jim Fregosi, their former shortstop and manager, will be inducted into the club’s Hall of Fame on May 17.
