The paternal grandmother of an 18-month-old boy found wandering alone in a Long Beach store has been given temporary custody of the child, according to family members.

Lawrence Edward Brown Jr., who spent five days in the custody of the Los Angeles County Department of Children’s Services was allowed to go home with his grandmother, Dorothy Brown, after a short dependency hearing Wednesday in Los Angeles Superior Court.

The baby was discovered last Friday wandering alone through a discount store a block away from his mother’s home. The child went unclaimed for three days before a family member called to identify the child after seeing his picture on a news broadcast.

Officials with the Children’s Services and Long Beach Police departments are continuing to question family members as to how the baby wound up alone in the discount store and why it took so long for someone to realize he was missing.

The boy’s parents, Doris Rivers, 25, and Lawrence Brown, 30, contend that each thought the other had the baby.
