Local News in Brief : Costa Mesa : Police to Crack Down on Harbor Blvd. Drivers

Share

Police are preparing to crack down on Harbor Boulevard traffic violators in an enforcement program that will begin Wednesday and continue through March 31.

Police will be stationed along Harbor between Adams and Baker streets to issue citations to motorists who are speeding, tailgating or making dangerous lane changes, Costa Mesa police spokesman Kevin Lovelady said.

Police will also ticket jaywalkers, bicyclists and commercial drivers guilty of violations “because they are the cause of many accidents,” said Lovelady, who is coordinating the effort.

A police study of traffic accidents in Costa Mesa during 2 months in 1988 revealed that the area between Adams and Baker streets on Harbor had the highest number of hit-and-run incidents, injury accidents and traffic violations. Next week, police will post yellow and black signs along streets feeding into the area warning motorists of the enforcement effort.

“The objective is to educate the public, not hand out citations,” Lovelady said.

The program will be conducted on a trial basis to see whether it helps reduce the area’s accident rate. The Huntington Beach Police Department has used a similar program since November, 1988.
