Animal kennel owner Ruby Mae Brown was jailed Monday after refusing to agree to turn over her guns to authorities. She had threatened last week to kill someone if she lost her kennel license.

Brown appeared before San Diego Municipal Judge E. Mac Amos on Monday for rescheduling of a trial date on animal-abuse charges.

Last week, she told reporters that she would kill anyone if her animal kennel license is revoked.

“If they take my license, I will kill,” Brown was quoted as saying after a court hearing. “I bought a gun and there’s no law in the United States that says they can take my gun.”

Brown refused to sign an agreement in court saying that she would surrender her weapons on the condition that she be allowed to remain free on her own recognizance.

A bail review was set for today.

Her kennel, Kelly’s Pet Motel on West Morena Boulevard, was raided Jan. 19 by Humane Society officers. They found more than 100 animals in feces-filled kennels and many of the animals were sick.

She was convicted in 1984 of 20 counts of animal abuse and sentenced to 45 days in jail for the misdemeanor offenses.

At the hearing Friday, she was searched with a metal detector before being allowed into the courtroom.
