College Roundup : Irvine Beats Pepperdine in Tennis for First Time in 13 Years
Despite losing its No. 1 singles player, Trevor Kronemann, for a portion of the match, fifth-ranked UC Irvine rallied to defeat 12th-ranked Pepperdine Tuesday, 5-4, in a men’s nonconference tennis match at Pepperdine.
The victory was Irvine’s first over Pepperdine in 13 years.
Kronemann turned an ankle just prior to his singles match and had to forfeit. But later, he teammed with Mike Briggs to defeat Kevin O’Neill and Christophe Van De Weghe, 6-4, 6-3, to cap an Irvine rally.
Irvine trailed, 2-4, after the singles portion of the match, but swept the doubles to seal the victory.
Along with Kronemann/Briggs, Irvine received doubles victories from No. 2 Mark Kaplan and Richard Lubner, defeating Grant Saacks and David Wells-Roth, 6-4, 5-7, 6-2, and No. 3 Mike Cadigan and Aaron Stolpman, defeating Tomer Zimmerman and Mark Hansen, 7-5, 6-4.
In Golden State Athletic Conference men’s basketball:
Southern California College 103, Point Loma Nazarene 95--Jeff Bickmore scored a career-high 37 points and had 13 rebounds, Todd Dixon and Terry Scruggs each scored 15 points to lead SCC (19-2, 7-0) at Pt. Loma.
In Golden State Athletic Conference women’s basketball:
Point Loma Nazarene 67, Southern Calif. College 43--Lori Halliday scored 12 points and Jennifer Hartigan had 15 (4-17, 0-6). Pt. Loma is 13-9 overall, 3-3 in conference play.
