A San Diego woman, hospitalized Sunday afternoon with a head wound after allegedly being shot by her son-in-law, died early Wednesday morning, a deputy coroner said.

Audrey Erbe, 58, died at Sharp Memorial Hospital at 1:30 a.m. A bullet had lodged in her brain and she had not been expected to survive, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Arrested in connection with the shooting was Randy Ernest Geering, 36, who reportedly quarreled with his mother-in-law and his estranged wife after confronting them in the women’s restroom of a doughnut shop in the 5000 block of Balboa Avenue in Clairemont.

After the shooting, Geering fled to his wife’s apartment in the 5500 block of Balboa Arms Drive, where he called a television station, reportedly to confess the shooting. The station called police, who arrested Geering.

The district attorney’s office plans to change a charge of attempted murder to murder during Geering’s bail review on Friday, said Gregg McClain, a deputy district attorney. Geering is being held in County Jail in lieu of $200,000 bail.
