TORONTO — Jimmy Key got the deal that Jim Clancy didn’t, so he’s staying with the Toronto Blue Jays. Key agreed late Wednesday to a three-year contract worth $5.4 million. The Blue Jays have an option for 1992 at $2.275 million. In December, Toronto refused to give Clancy a three-year contract and he signed with the Houston Astros for $3.45 million over three years.
Key had been scheduled for an arbitration hearing Feb. 10 in Chicago before Richard Bloch. Key had been asking for $1.35 million and the Blue Jays had been offering $1.2 million.
The new contract calls for Key to get a $500,000 signing bonus, $1.6 million this season, $1.3 million in 1990 and $2 million in 1991.
