Students Get Hot on Global Ecology Issue

The sixth-grade students in teacher Bert Jungmann’s classroom have formed the Students’ Crusade to Stop the Greenhouse Effect after studying about the global warming trend.

The 27 students at Stanford Avenue Elementary School in South Gate are doing their part to help reduce the emission of gases such as carbon dioxide that contribute to the earth’s rising temperature by purchasing a tree to be planted at school. They are collecting newspapers for recycling to raise the money.

The students were encouraged in their efforts by South Gate City Councilman William H. DeWitt and James L. Shelton, administrative assistant to state Sen. Bill Greene (D-Los Angeles), who recently visited the class.

Shelton encouraged the students to express their views on the greenhouse effect by writing letters to elected officials.
