College Basketball Roundup : Georgetown Pulls Away to Defeat Connecticut

Jaren Jackson scored eight of his 18 points during the first 7:52 of the second half as second-ranked Georgetown went on a 20-10 run and pulled away from Connecticut for a 70-58 Big East victory at Hartford, Conn., Wednesday night.

Georgetown (18-2 overall and 8-1 in conference play) increased the lead to 65-43 before Connecticut (12-7, 3-6) scored 13 straight to close within 65-56 with 48 seconds to play. The Hoyas were able to hold on as Mark Tillmon and Charles Smith combined for five points.

Louisville 69, Cincinnati 66--Pervis Ellison scored 17 points, had seven rebounds and scored the go-ahead basket as the fourth-ranked Cardinals rallied to win a Metro Conference game at Cincinnati.

Ellison, who missed two games with a knee injury and didn’t start in Monday night’s loss to Florida State, helped the Cardinals come back from deficits of nine points.

Louisville (17-4, 6-1) remained one-half behind first-place Florida State.

Florida State 88, South Carolina 72--Tony Dawson scored 20 of his 30 points in the second half as the 12th-ranked Seminoles won a Metro Conference game at Tallahassee, Fla.

George McCloud had 28 points for the Seminoles (19-2, 7-1). John Hudson scored 19 points and Barry Manning had 18 for South Carolina (13-7, 3-3).

Duke 85, Virginia 66--Danny Ferry scored 24 points as the No. 14 Blue Devils won their Atlantic Coast Conference game at Durham, N.C.

Playing a tough man-to-man defense, the Blue Devils (16-4, 5-4) pressured Virginia (13-7, 5-3) into poor shots and ended the Cavaliers’ six-game winning streak.

Georgia Tech 78, Iona 69--Tom Hammonds scored 28 points and Dennis Scott had 24 as the No. 20 Yellow Jackets won at New York.

Iona (10-13) led, 54-48, with 12:40 to play, but Scott scored nine of the Yellow Jackets’ next 13 points and his jumper with 8:18 left gave Georgia Tech (15-7) the lead for good, 61-60.

Florida 65, Georgia 60--Dwayne Schintzius’ jump hook with 12 seconds left helped the Gators win their Southeastern Conference game at Gainesville, Fla.

Schintzius’ basket gave the Gators a 63-60 lead. His free throw with 1:02 left had put them ahead, 61-60.

Florida is 13-10 and 7-4. Georgia is 13-9, 5-7.

Oklahoma State 87, Kansas 81--Darwyn Alexander scored 23 points and Thomas Jordan scored 16 to lead the Cowboys at Lawrence, Kan.

Oklahoma State, winning on the road for the first time this season, recovered from an early deficit to post a 41-39 halftime lead and trailed only once in the second half.

Oklahoma State is 14-6 overall, 5-2 in the Big Eight. Kansas (16-7, 3-5) lost its fourth in a row.

Vanderbilt 81, Kentucky 51--Barry Goheen scored 23 points and Frank Kornet added 18 as Vanderbilt won a Southeastern Conference game at Nashville, Tenn.

Vanderbilt is 13-10 overall and 7-4 in the SEC. Kentucky, which suffered its worst defeat of the season, is 11-12, 6-5.

Louisiana State 104, Auburn 91--Chris Jackson scored 24 points and Ricky Blanton had 21 points to help LSU win a Southeastern Conference game at Auburn, Ala.

LSU is 16-6 and 8-3; Auburn is 7-12, 0-11.

Minnesota 59, Wisconsin 58--Willie Burton made a free throw with 2 seconds remaining, lifting the Gophers to a Big Ten victory at Minneapolis.

Burton scored 17 points to lead the Gophers. Danny Jones led Wisconsin with 23 points, and Trent Jackson had 20.

Arkansas 105, Texas 82--Senior Keith Wilson scored 31 points and junior Mario Credit had 30--both career highs--as the Razorbacks moved into a tie for first place with the Longhorns in the Southwest Conference with a victory at Fayetteville, Ark.

Texas (17-5) and Arkansas (15-5) are each 8-2 in the conference.

Tennessee 81, Mississippi St. 71--Dyron Nix had 33 points and 14 rebounds to lead the Volunteers in a Southeastern Conference game at Knoxville, Tenn.

Alabama 55, Mississippi 54--Michael Ansley’s eight-footer with 4 seconds left lifted the Tide to a Southeastern Conference victory at Oxford, Miss.
