WELLINGTON, New Zealand — Top-seeded Conchita Martinez of Spain beat Louise Field of Australia 6-2, 6-0 today, advancing to the quarterfinals of the $50,000 Fernleaf Classic women’s tennis tournament.
No. 2 seed Belinda Cordwell of New Zealand also won her second-round match, beating Rachel McQuillan 6-3, 6-1. Cordwell was a semifinalist last month at the Australian Open.
In the longest match of the day, Leigh Anne Eldredge of Altadena, Calif., beat Michelle Jaggard of Australia 5-7, 7-5, 6-1 in 2 two hours, 20 minutes.
