If Rosenberg had read Larry McMurtry’s novel “Lonesome Dove,” he would have realized that the story was a morality play with many “unbelievable” characters representing various human aspects acted out in the rich setting of the Old West. The “convenient” meetings of characters on the plains were a Dickens-type delight and the “Tonto” role of the black cowhand was an accepted role in the 1800s. The black character was recognized as the most intelligent and reliable member of the group.
