Plane Crashes Near Julian; 3 May Be Aboard

Three people are believed to have been on board an airplane that crashed Sunday afternoon into Volcan Mountain, FAA officials said, but severe weather conditions and rugged terrain kept rescuers from the crash site until today.

The County Sheriff’s Department and FAA officials received calls from residents in nearby Julian saying they heard an explosion about 3:45 p.m. Deputies from Ranchita and Borrego Springs drove to the scene to investigate and at 5 p.m. saw the destroyed plane on the east side of the mountain, just 2 3/4 miles north of Julian.

Sheriff’s deputies reported that there were no signs of life, said Sgt. Kurt Fettu.

“When the weather permits, we will try to get to the plane. It’s snowing now, and visibility is low. There were also lightning storms up there earlier,” Fettu said.
