Compiled by Times staff writer Jerry Hicks

Randy Steven Kraft, charged with murdering 16 men, is on trial in Orange County Superior Court in what some legal experts say will be the biggest and costliest case in California history. LAST WEEK Kraft’s sister and cousin, the first family members to testify, said Kraft was planning and attending his father’s birthday party on the weekend that he allegedly killed two men. The trial halted after two days because of illness and scheduling problems among jurors. THE PROSECUTION ‘Would this be a case where two experts could legimately have differing opinions?’ --Deputy Dist. Atty. Bryan F. Brown, questioning a technical expert witness. THE DEFENSE ‘The prosecution’s entire case (on the two killings) is based on rank speculation. ‘ --C. Thomas McDonald, Kraft attorney, outside the courtroom. NUMBER OF WITNESSES Last Week: 11. To Date: 183. ITEMS LOGGED AS POSSIBLE EVIDENCE Last week: 5. To Date: 1,061. THIS WEEK Although Kraft’s attorneys once estimated that they would finish presenting their case by the end of this week, they so far have presented detailed evidence in only four of the 16 killings. The trial is set to resume Tuesday as the defense addresses the deaths of Wyatt Loggins and Eric Church. * Jury selection and legal motions began July 25, 1988, and testimony began Sept. 5. The trial recessed for about 2 months at the end of the prosecution’s case.
