Center fielder Eric Davis of the Cincinnati Reds told the Cincinnati Enquirer he’s unhappy with the team’s position in contract talks and wants to be traded.

Reds General Manager Murray Cook dismisses the trade request as a negotiating ploy, and nothing to be alarmed about.

“I think it’s a result of their frustration in not signing yet,” Cook said. “It’s an action by the agent, nothing more, and it’s somewhat unusual.”

Davis is scheduled for an arbitration hearing Thursday.

“The whole issue is their attitude,” Davis said. “They are putting things on the table and saying take it or leave it. For someone to do what I have done there and be treated like that, it’s not right.”

The Reds are offering Davis $1.15 million. He’s seeking $1.6 million in arbitration.

Agent Eric Goldschmidt said Davis has formally asked to be traded.

“The request is based on all the problems Eric has had with the Reds, from the first year when he came up and they tried to make him a singles hitter to the past two years when they have questioned his injuries,” Goldschmidt said.

Davis, who is from Los Angeles, has said in the past he would like to play for the Dodgers.

However, Davis, 26, will be bound by the arbitrator’s decision if no settlement is reached. He has two more seasons before he’s eligible for free agency.
