Centers Getting Too Big for Him; Joe Klecko Retires

Indianapolis Colts nose tackle Joe Klecko, a 12-year NFL veteran, announced his retirement today, saying the decision lifted a weight from his shoulders.

“I really feel great about retiring,” Klecko said at a news conference at the Colts’ headquarters.

“My time has passed,” he said.

“When I came in the league, and even four or five years ago, I remember playing against centers who were 250 or 260 pounds. This year, I played against nine guys that were 290 pounds. It’s time for the little guys to move aside.”

Klecko, 35, spent his entire NFL career with the New York Jets until coming to the Colts last season. The 6-foot-3, 265-pound Klecko, a sixth-round draft pick from Temple, led all NFL rookies with eight sacks and 90 tackles in 1977, although he didn’t start until the ninth week of the season.

Indianapolis coach Ron Meyer gave Klecko his jersey from last season.

Speaking to Klecko, Meyer said, “I really appreciate the stability you brought our team last year. You epitomize what we all want players to aspire to.”
