The Invasion of ‘Fly II’

Fox’s horror release, “The Fly II,” took over the nation’s theaters this weekend, surpassing “Three Fugitives” and “Rain Man” to land in the No. 1 spot. “Fly II,” boosted by the popularity of the original film, grossed $6.8 million at 1,524 theaters, an average of $4,430 per screen. Meanwhile, MGM/UA’s “Rain Man” broke through the $100-million mark in its ninth week of release, while Warners’ “Her Alibi” plunged nearly 50% in its second week. Not an auspicious beginning for the Tom Selleck-Paulina Porizkova comedy.
* Paramount’s “Cousins,” starring Ted Danson and Isabella Rossellini, enjoyed a healthy opening, grossing $3 million at only 535 theaters, a per-screen average of $5,680. The film should do even better when it moves onto more than 700 theaters next weekend.
