Devon Schutzler hit a home run with one out in the top of the ninth inning to give Cal Lutheran a 2-1 victory over Pepperdine in a nonconference baseball game Wednesday at Pepperdine.

Schutzler’s solo home run--his first of the season--came on a 2-1 pitch and gave Cal Lutheran, an NAIA school, its first victory against Pepperdine, a perennial Division I power.

Chris Matkin (2-0) pitched two innings of no-hit relief to pick up the win for the Kingsmen. Matkin relieved starter Mike Clark, who gave up one run on five hits in seven innings.

Cal Lutheran (3-3) took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Darnell Mitchell scored on Dave Leonhardt’s single. Mitchell, who was two for three, walked to open the game and advanced to second when Dan Weis walked.

After retiring the first eight batters he faced, Clark allowed consecutive singles to Mike Truschke, Richard Barnwell and Rich Hirtensteiner in the third inning, but Pepperdine failed to score when Truschke was thrown out at home by second baseman Henry Campos on a relay from outfielder Mitchell.

“That gave us a big lift,” Cal Lutheran Coach Rich Hill said.

Pepperdine tied the score in the seventh when Chris Martin doubled, advanced to third on Bill Blanchett’s groundout and scored on a sacrifice fly by Truschke.
