A man put a pistol in a Mission Beach woman’s face and took her silver Porsche 928 Thursday, saying he needed it to save his brother’s life and that he would bring it back in half an hour, police said.

Barbara Gonzalez, 42, pulled into her garage on Ocean Front Walk about 4:30 p.m. with two small children in the car and found the man waiting for her, police said.

“He said, ‘I’m sorry, I just need your car. I’ll bring it back in half an hour. I need it to save my brother’s life,’ ” police spokesman Bill Robinson said. Gonzalez and the children were not injured.

During that half hour, the man got into a drag race with another car. Police said they saw the car in front of an apartment complex in the 4500 block of Castelar Street and found Joshua James Jones, 18, of Macon, Ga., hiding in a laundry room in the complex. They found a loaded, .32-caliber pistol and Gonzalez’s purse in the car.

Jones, who reportedly deserted from the Navy base at Vallejo four months ago, was being held in County Jail on suspicion of armed robbery, auto theft and burglary, police said.
