The Preps : Soccer Playoff Roundup : Ammann Gives Mater Dei Boys Overtime Victory

Mike Ammann scored in the sudden-death overtime to give Mater Dei High School a 2-1 victory over Claremont in the first round of the Southern Section boys’ 4-A soccer playoffs Friday at Mater Dei.

After playing a scoreless overtime period, the two teams went into the sudden-death period. With 5 minutes left, Jimmy Cook centered the ball to Ammann, who headed it past Claremont goalie Zack Bodner.

Doug West scored 15 minutes into the match to give Mater Dei (12-8) a 1-0 lead. Mike Cox scored 10 minutes later to tie the score for Claremont (15-6-5).

Goalie Chip Packard made six saves for Mater Dei, which advances to play top-seeded Palos Verdes Friday. Bodner made 13 saves for Claremont.

In the first round of the 2-A playoffs:

Esperanza 2, Laguna Hills 0--Mike Voss and Erin Rippenger scored for the Aztecs (13-3-2) at Esperanza. Voss scored midway through the first half, as the Aztecs led, 1-0, at halfime. Rippenger scored with 5 minutes left in the match. Goalies Derek Sabori and Dusty DuBeirl combined for the shutout. Sabori made five saves in the first half and DuBeirl made four saves in the second half. Jeff Calvert made 12 saves for Laguna Hills (9-4-9).

Kennedy 3, Trabuco Hills 1 (OT)--Kyong Kim and Diego Abbes scored in overtime for the Fighting Irish (15-4-3) at Kennedy. Kim scored with 5 minutes left in the second overtime period and Abbes scored 2 minutes later. Kim also had a first-half goal for Kennedy. Goalie Jerry Vargas made seven saves for the Fighting Irish. Scott Wood made 11 saves for Trabuco Hills (10-3-5).

In the first round of the 3-A girls’ playoffs:

Kennedy 1, Woodbridge 0--Vicki Crisostomo scored 5 minutes into the sudden-death overtime period for Kennedy (11-9-1) at Woodbridge. Goalie Ricki Tipton made 10 saves for the Fighting Irish. Summer Nastich made seven for the Warriors (11-10-1).

La Quinta 3, Sunny Hills 1--Sophomore Cheryl Jones scored three goals, two in the second half, to break a 1-1 tie for host La Quinta (14-3-1). Wendy Wilson had five saves for La Quinta. Sunny Hills ends the season, 9-8-2.

Mater Dei 4, Trabuco Hills 0--Kim Donahue, Allison Salinger, Margaret Braun and Susan Steiner scored for the Monarchs (13-4-2) at Mater Dei. Goalie Michelle Lodyga made five saves for Mater Dei. Robyn San Fillappo made 10 saves for Trabuco Hills (10-9-1).

San Gorgonio 3, La Habra 2--Jackie Powers, Karin Neary and Brenda Huerter scored for host San Gorgonio (16-4-4). La Habra’s two goals came when a San Gorgonio player kicked the ball into their own goal. La Habra finishes the season 12-4-4.
