College Roundup : CSUN Rebounds With 7-4 Victory

Chae-Ho Chong hit a two-run home run and Robert Wheatcroft pitched a six-hitter Saturday to lead host Cal State Northridge to a 7-4 nonconference victory over St. Mary’s.

Behind, 3-1, Northridge tied the score in the fifth inning then took a 5-3 lead on Chong’s blast in the seventh. John Bonilla, who had singled to open the inning, scored ahead of Chong. Mike Solar went four for four for CSUN, which had 14 hits but committed four errors.

The Matadors (5-1), who came back from a crushing 15-2 loss to Cal State Long Beach on Friday, will again play host to St. Mary’s today, at noon. Wheatcroft (3-0) struck out four and walked one in pitching his second complete game.

In other baseball games:

Mission 8, Palomar 5--Jose Garcia allowed only one earned run in 7 2/3 innings for the victory and Manuel Orozco had two hits and two runs batted in as Mission picked up its first win in the nonconference game at Palomar.

Chris Romo and John Kukawski each doubled and singled for Mission. Garcia gave up eight hits and struck out four before Tony Margoles relieved him in the eighth.

Cal Lutheran 4-7, Whittier 2-1--The Kingsmen received superb pitching from Jay Anderson and Kevin O’Neill to sweep the nonconference doubleheader at Whittier. Anderson (1-1) pitched a complete game in the opener, allowing two unearned runs on three hits and no walks.

Pt. Loma 9-6, The Master’s 4-7--The Mustangs scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning of the second game to gain a split in the NAIA District 3 doubleheader at Pt. Loma. Russ Henzie led off with a pinch-hit single and Matt Price followed with a pinch-hit double, Henzie stopping at third. Henzie scored when Craig Johnson grounded to short and Randy Tippitt overthrew first base.

Mark MacArthur followed with an infield single that drove in Price for Master’s first win of the season.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Point Loma Nazarene 135, Cal Lutheran 128 (3 OTs)--Five Cal Lutheran players fouled out and the Kingsmen finally succumbed in the Golden State Athletic Conference game at Point Loma.

Jeff Logsdon made a three-point shot at the first overtime buzzer for Cal Lutheran.

Santa Monica 113, Canyons 82--Five Corsairs scored in double figures as Santa Monica produced a 71-point second half in the Western State Conference game at Canyons. Aaron Clark led Canyons (14-8, 5-10) with 24 points.

Glendale 90, Bakersfield 69--Alex Berry scored a game-high 23 points and Dave Swanson added 20 points and had 10 rebounds for the Vaqueros in the WSC game at Glendale. Justin Lord added 15 points for Glendale (18-11, 9-5).

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Stanford d. Cal State Northridge, 5-15, 15-6, 15-17, 15-13, 15-13--Rob Samuelson had a match-high 39 kills in a losing cause in a Western Intercollegiate Volleyball Assn. match at Stanford.

Stanford, the fourth-ranked team in the nation, was led by 1988 Olympian Scott Fortune, who had 33 kills. Dan Hanan added 32 kills for Stanford (9-3, 6-1).

SWIMMING AND DIVING

Jude Kylander, Tina Dodson and Lisa Dial won individual events for CS Northridge on the third day of the four-day California Collegiate Athletic Assn. swimming and diving championships at Cal State Bakersfield. Dodson’s and Dials’ marks were CCAA meet records.

Kylander won the 200-yard freestyle in 1 minute, 54.71 seconds, Dodson swam the 100 butterfly in 58.14 and Dial clocked 4:39.57 in the 400 individual medley.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Cal State Northridge 76, Cal State Dominguez Hills 53--Chris Cavalin, with 15 points, led five Northridge players in double figures as the Lady Matadors romped in a California Collegiate Athletic Assn. game at CSUN.

Moorpark 62, Ventura 45--Kristie Sterbens scored 17 points for Moorpark--which won its last five regular-season games--in the WSC game at Ventura.

Point Loma Nazarene 68, Cal Lutheran 61--Cal Lutheran shot 50% from the field in the first half but made only 24% after intermission of the Golden State Athletic Conference game at Point Loma.

Santa Monica 92, Canyons 59--Forward LaVerne Moore scored 40 points on 17-of-21 shooting and 6 of 12 free throws to lead Santa Monica (22-7, 10-3) in the WSC game.

Occidental 75, Christ College 69 (OT)--Kelly Stephenson scored six points in overtime to lead the Tigers in the nonconference game at Christ College.
