Share

Household toxic waste--old cans of paint, unused pesticides, leftover drain cleaners, used motor oil and other common hazardous materials--can be safely disposed of at a “toxic roundup” Saturday at Mission Viejo High School.

Sponsored by the Orange County Fire Department in cooperation with other agencies, the collection site will be open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The Fire Department will accept latex and oil-based paints, pesticides, household cleaning products, wood preservatives, paint thinner, drain cleaners, auto and furniture polish, oven cleaners, fertilizers, weed killers and pool and photographic chemicals.

It is unsafe to dispose of the common but toxic chemical products in the regular trash, which is taken to landfills, according to fire officials. Improperly disposed of materials can cause poisoning, skin burns, allergies and respiratory problems, they said.

The waste materials should be in original containers, which should not be leaking. Each contribution to the collection site is limited to 5 gallons or 50 pounds.

The roundup will not accept radioactive materials, compressed gas cylinders or ammunition or explosives.
