A 15-year-old Garden Grove boy was critically injured Monday afternoon when he rode his bicycle into the path of an oncoming truck in Fountain Valley, police said.

The victim was not identified by police because he is a juvenile. He was airlifted by helicopter to UCI Medical Center. Police said he had suffered broken bones, a spinal injury and a possible punctured lung.

The accident occurred at 1:42 p.m. at Brookhurst Street and Garfield Avenue.

Fountain Valley Police Lt. Mike Hanrahan said the truck driver, a 30-year-old Diamond Bar man, was not cited but that an investigation is continuing.

Hanrahan said the driver of the dump truck and trailer was southbound on Brookhurst and was making a right turn onto Garfield when the accident occurred.

The bicyclist, also going south on Brookhurst, but on the sidewalk, was trying to cross the intersection, Hanrahan said, and apparently didn’t see the trailer.

“It appears the male juvenile rode his bike off the sidewalk into the path of the trailer after the truck had passed by,” Hanrahan said.

“The right side of both sets of trailer wheels ran over the bicycle. The bike was pretty well flattened out in the accident.”
