IN BRIEF : Leconte Goes to 2nd Round at Lyon

Henri Leconte of France beat Davis Cup teammate Thierry Tulasne 6-3, 6-2 today to advance to the second round of the $291,000 Lyon Grand Prix tennis tournament.

Leconte, seeded third, had an easy time with Tulasne, breaking him twice in the first set and three times in the second. He lost his serve once, giving away the first game of the second set with a double fault.

Jakob Hlasek of Switzerland and John McEnroe, the top two seeds of the tournament, begin their first-round play Wednesday.

In other matches today, four Swedish players advanced. Fifth-seeded Anders Jarryd downed Michiel Schapers of the Netherlands 6-3, 6-2; Jonas Svensson beat Gaullaume Raoux of France 6-3, 6-3; Christian Bergstrom downed Diego Nargiso of Italy 6-4, 7-6 (7-4); and Niclas Kroon defeated Thierry Champion of France 3-6, 6-4, 6-2.

In a match between two West Germans, Eric Jelen whipped Patrick Baur 6-2, 6-2.

The tournament continues through Sunday and offers a $52,200 first prize.
