Local News in Brief : Supervisors Order AIDS Patient Area

Share

Los Angeles County supervisors ordered county officials Tuesday to set up in the next 60 days an area at County-USC Medical Center specifically for AIDS patients.

A 20-bed ward is scheduled to open at County-USC in September, but Supervisor Ed Edelman warned that it will not be available for occupancy at that time unless “plan review and construction are pursued on a fast-track basis.”

Also Tuesday, Los Angeles City Councilwoman Gloria Molina called for formation of an AIDS commission to help coordinate the city’s response to the disease and proposed having AIDS hospices in each council district.

Molina proposed her motion in place of a plan by Councilman Nate Holden to form a task force to examine the feasibility of converting the empty Queen of Angels Medical Center into a large-scale AIDS hospital and hospice.

Both Molina’s and Holden’s proposals were sent to the council’s Public Health, Human Resources and Senior Citizens Committee.
