Local News in Brief : Fullerton : Toppling of a Forklift Ties Up Orange Freeway

Share

Traffic was snarled for about an hour on the southbound Orange Freeway on Tuesday afternoon after a truck towing an 18-foot-tall forklift struck a 17-foot overpass.

The force of the crash threw the driver of the truck, Roland Ostiguy, 44, of Yorba Linda, and his passenger forward, but the men were not injured because they were wearing seat belts, said Officer Mike Lundquist of the California Highway Patrol.

Ostiguy was driving about 55 m.p.h. The boom of the forklift extended about 18 feet into the air, Lundquist said.

The truck passed under the Yorba Linda Boulevard overpass, but the boom struck it, causing the forklift to overturn onto the freeway, Lundquist said.

The Orange County Fire Department was called to clean up spilled gasoline. Caltrans officials checked the overpass for potential structural damage, Lundquist said.
