3 Films by Blacks to Be Screened at LACE

Three recent films made by black independent film makers from Great Britain will be screened by Filmforum at LACE (Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibition) on Monday at 8 p.m.

“Handsworth Songs,” directed by John Akomfrah, is a documentary view of the 1985 Handsworth riots. The film juxtaposes the dreams of West Indian immigrants with the hostility of the ‘native’ British population and the mainstream media. Also on the program are “Territories,” directed by Isaac Julien about black street culture as it collides with a decaying urban Britain, and “Dreaming Rivers,” directed by Martina Attile about a dying Afro-Caribbean woman’s reflections on her migration to England.
