About 40 people in the UC Irvine Physical Sciences Building were evacuated Friday night when about 4 liters of a hazardous material, cyclopentadiene, was spilled in a fifth-floor stock room.
No injuries were reported, although two students complained of dizziness and were taken to the Student Health Center as a precaution, said Linda Granell, UCI director of public information.
About 40 fire safety personnel, including two hazardous-materials teams, were called to the campus at 7:54 p.m., Orange County Fire Department spokesman Dan Southworth said.
The teams cleaned up the material, which has a strong, perfume-like odor and is harmful when inhaled in large amounts, Granell said.
