New Phone Service Proposed: Pacific Bell is planning to try out a new service that allows subscribers to see the telephone numbers of people who call them before deciding whether to pick up their receivers. The service, which utilizes an electronic recording device, would allow customers to ignore calls from people they do not know or do not wish to talk to. It would also enable people to permanently block specific phone numbers from ringing through to them. Pacific Bell said it expects to start the service in San Francisco on a trial basis this summer.
