A 61-year-old man who threatened to kill himself and his girlfriend by setting off plastic explosives in his apartment was taken into custody by the San Diego Police Department Special Weapons and Tactics team early Wednesday, authorities said.

Richard Mauzay called an operator at 7 p.m. Tuesday and said he was going to blow up his apartment in the 4100 block of Cherokee Avenue in North Park, police said.

The SWAT team responded at 9 p.m. and stormed the apartment shortly after 12:30 a.m.

No explosives were found, and Mauzay, who said he was a Vietnam veteran and former Marine, was taken to the County Mental Health hospital, police said.
