NHL Roundup : Canadiens Defeat Flames, 3-2

Brent Gilchrist scored from the top of the faceoff circle midway through the third period as the Montreal Canadiens defeated the Calgary Flames, 3-2, Thursday night at Calgary, in a game that matched the teams with the best records in the National Hockey League.

The win was Montreal’s second victory of the season over the Flames in the Saddledome and moved the Canadiens within a point of league-leading Calgary. The Flames, who have lost only four games at home, have 96 points compared to Montreal’s 95.

Boston 5, Quebec 2--Cam Neely scored his 30th goal of the season and Ken Linseman got his 20th as the Bruins defeated the Nordiques at Boston and moved into second place in the Adams Division.

The victory extended the Bruins’ unbeaten streak to six games and moved them two points ahead of third-place Buffalo with a game in hand.

Hartford 2, Vancouver 1-- Defenseman Ulf Samuelsson scored the game-winner at 8:13 of the third period as the Whalers defeated the Canucks at Hartford.

Samuelsson worked the puck away from Petri Skriko in the neutral zone and fired home a 50-footer from the blue line.
