NHL Roundup : Canadiens Win, 6-1, Replace Flames as Points Leader

Guy Carbonneau and Ryan Walter scored 70 seconds apart in the second period as the Montreal Canadiens defeated the Hartford Whalers, 6-1, Saturday night at Hartford, Conn.

Stephane Richer, Claude Lemieux, Mats Naslund and Bobby Smith also scored for the Canadiens, who overtook idle Calgary for the most points in the National Hockey League. Montreal has has 97 points and Calgary 96.

“We have been trailing them (Calgary) for a long time, and it’s nice to finally get up there,” said Canadien center Russ Courtnall, who had three assists.

Brian Hayward stopped 22 shots--all but Brian Lawton’s power-play goal at 15:40 of the first period.

Montreal has won six of seven games from Hartford this season.

“We seem to do something (wrong) every time against this team,” Hartford Coach Larry Pleau said.

Quebec 6, Buffalo 2--Peter Stastny scored two goals as the Nordiques ended a four-game losing streak by beating the Sabres at Quebec.

Stastny scored his 27th and 28th goals of the season, and Jeff Brown got his 17th to break his own club record for defensemen.

Minnesota 4, New York Islanders 3-- Frantisek Musil scored at 13:13 of the third period to break a 3-3 tie and lift the North Stars to a victory over the Islanders at Bloomington, Minn.

The Islanders had tied the score on a short-handed goal by Patrick Flatley at 1:33 of the third period.

Marc Habscheid scored two goals for the North Stars.

Boston 6, Vancouver 4--Randy Burridge scored three goals and Cam Neely added a goal and three assists as the Bruins defeated Canucks at Boston.

Burridge, with his second career hat trick, helped the Bruins extend their NHL unbeaten streak to seven games (6-0-1).

Chicago 3, Toronto 3--Troy Murray’s second goal of the game at 1:03 of the third period got the Blackhawks a tie with the Maple Leafs at Toronto.

Jeremy Roenick passed to Murray on a 2-on-1 break and Murray slid his 18th goal of the season past goalie Allan Bester into the open side of the net.

Detroit 5, St. Louis 4--Petr Klima scored his second goal of the game at 2:50 of overtime as the Red Wings extended their unbeaten streak to six games by defeating the Blues at St. Louis.

Brett Hull sent the game into overtime when he scored his 30th goal of the season at 3:32 of the third period.
