Giamatti Isn’t Pleased With Schott’s Coin Flip

A. Bartlett Giamatti, wasn’t amused when Cincinnati Reds owner Marge Schott flipped a coin to determine the contract of outfielder Kal Daniels.

Schott resorted to a coin flip when Daniels and General Manager Murray Cook reached an impasse in contract talks. Daniels asked for $325,000, with Cook reportedly offering about $315,000.

“We do not consider it a form of gambling,” Giamatti told the Cincinnati Post. “However, if what I read is right, it is a ridiculous way to negotiate a contract and trivializes the whole process and demeans the participants.

Schott decided to settle the matter by flipping a coin on live television. Daniels won.
