Bonita Vista High School defeated Monte Vista, 2-1, in double overtime in the San Diego Section 3-A boys’ soccer final Saturday at Torrey Pines High School. It was a match that both coaches said was plagued by poor officiating.

“The officials should have been more on top of the game. Both teams are physical and both play strong. The game was rough,” Monte Vista Coach Bob Davis said.

At the first overtime buzzer, Monte Vista’s goalkeeper Tyler Adamson was kicked in the eye by Bonita Vista’s Jason Murphy. Adamson suffered a three-inch cut above his right eye. According to Davis, Adamson was kicked after the save was made. Bonita Vista Coach Jerry Hombs said Murphy did not do it intentionally.

Adamson stayed in the game, serving in goal as Yeff Yakubik scored Bonita Vista’s winning goal in the second overtime. After the game, Adamson was taken by stretcher to a hospital. “Probably the deep hurt for Tyler is the result of the game,” Davis said. “He’s very much the heart of this team. It took this for our team to finally bend. It did take something out of us that may have been very critical. Bonita Vista is a fine team and I do give credit to them.”

Monte Vista’s Ernie Reyes scored its goal on a penalty kick at the 11-minute mark of the first half.

Ten minutes into the second half, Jarret Stevenson’s goal tied the score for Bonita Vista.
