Chargers Land Free Agent Williams From Browns

The Chargers made it official Tuesday with the announcement they have signed former Cleveland guard Larry Williams. Williams, 6-5 and 290, became a free agent last month when he was left unprotected recently by the Browns because of shoulder surgery in January.

Williams is a three-year veteran from Notre Dame who started all 14 games he played in for the Browns last year. He was a 10th round draft choice in 1985.

BASEBALL

Billy Miller hit his third home run in three games, and Rick Navarro picked up his first college victory as host San Diego State defeated Riverside, 10-5.

Mike Morgan and Rick Rupkey each pitched a complete game as UC San Diego split a nonconference doubleheader with Claremont. Host Claremont won the first game, 7-2, and UCSD won the second in 10 innings, 7-3.

Point Loma Nazarene (6-7) scored 10 runs in the first inning en route to its 19-9 victory over host Whittier College (10-3-1).

Azusa Pacific weathered two USIU home runs to upend the host Gulls, 8-6. Barry Williams and Kevin Tahan each hit solo shots for the Gulls (8-12).

USD (6-8) scored five unearned runs in the second inning to defeat visiting Southern California College (8-9), 6-4. James Ferguson was the winner (1-4).

AMATEUR BASKETBALL

San Diego has been selected by the Amateur Athletic Union as one of 11 U.S. cities to host the Soviet junior boys’ basketball team. A team of San Diego County high school players will be selected by the San Diego County High School Coaches Assn. to play the Soviets May 13 at the Sports Arena.

Forty-five cities applied to host the Soviets said Michael Brunker, representing the San Diego Police Athletic League, the sponsor of the event.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

Point Loma Nazarene (4-4, 1-1) shut out host Christ College Irvine (0-7, 0-3), 9-0, in a Golden State Athletic Conference match. Kim Wright defeated Corrie Stelmachowicz, 6-3, 6-1, at No. 1 singles.

MEN’S TENNIS

Mark Farren rallied from a first set loss to win the No. 2 singles and then teamed with Chris Toomey in No. 1 doubles to lead the University of San Diego (11-3) over the Naval Academy, 7-2.

San Diego State’s Woody Yocum handed Scott Campbell his first loss of the season at No. 3 singles, 6-1, 6-2, as Ball State defeated the Aztecs, 8-1. SDSU is 4-8.

SOFTBALL

Cindy Oliver pitched her second no-hitter of the season in the second game as USIU’s softball team swept a doubleheader from USD, 7-1 and 4-0.
