A celebrity-studded fund-raiser is being planned to aid the legal defense fund for Don Jackson, the Hawthorne police sergeant who alleges he was the victim of racism and brutality at the hands of a Long Beach police officer.

Assemblywoman Maxine Waters (D-Los Angeles), singer Dionne Warwick and the California Rainbow coalition will hold a reception in his honor at 4 p.m. Sunday at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel.

Developer Danny Bakewell, one of the organizers of the event, said 45 minority organizations endorse the gathering.

“We want to let this brother know we appreciate what he’s doing,” said Bakewell, who is president of Brotherhood Crusade Black United Fund. The lengthy list of endorsers sends a message to the Long Beach Police Department that “there are more people watching them than just Don Jackson,” Bakewell said.

The special guests scheduled to appear include actress Marla Gibbs of the television series “The Jeffersons” and actor Glynn Turman of the series “Different World.’
