Four University of Arizona football players--including one from Tarzana--were jailed overnight for investigation of alleged misdemeanor assaults of a racial nature, authorities said today.

The four freshmen, all black, faced arraignment or initial appearances today, officials said. Police said the four allegedly sought out white victims walking alone, accused them of racial slurs and then assaulted them.

Tucson Police Sgt. Paul Hallums said the four, and a fifth person who was not a football player but who was not identified immediately, were arrested in connection with a series of assaults in the university area.
