Of All the Marathon Times, the Worst One Was the Starting Time

Share

Having run the last three Los Angeles Marathons, I think the absurd starting time of 9 a.m. will forever prevent the race from achieving world-class status and will eventually cause its demise.

Southern California has the best running weather in the world from about 6 to 9 a.m. and to start at 9 is just throwing away one of the greatest advantages this area has over other locations.

If the weather this past Sunday had been similar to that of the previous Sunday, the danger to the runners would have been extremely high.

TV coverage, and the general Los Angeles pattern of making every event a media extravaganza, should not dictate the conditions under which 20,000 of us run.
