Issajenko Claims Pam Marshall of U.S. Used Steroids
Canada’s top woman sprinter, who has admitted taking anabolic steroids since 1979, today implicated another American in the use of banned performance-enhancing drugs.
Angella Issajenko, a teammate since 1978 of disgraced sprinter Ben Johnson, referred to personal diaries that have been entered as evidence as she testified for a second day at the Canadian inquiry into drug use in amateur sports.
In a diary entry dated June 10, 1986, Issajenko had written: “Marshall didn’t run at the Harry Jerome Meet because she couldn’t pass doping controls.”
The entry referred to American sprinter Pam Marshall, who Issajenko suggested pulled out of a track meet in Vancouver, British Columbia, after Charlie Francis informed Marshall’s coach that there would be drug testing.
Marshall is the second American athlete to be named by Issajenko with regard to use of banned substances. On Monday Issajenko testified that shot putter Brian Oldfield had supplied her with steroids in 1981. Oldfield has denied it.
