One suspect was killed and a second wounded in a police shooting after the two assertedly attempted to pick up ransom money Tuesday night in South-Central Los Angeles.

However, police Lt. William Hall said, their two alleged kidnaping victims, a 32-year-old woman and her 4-year-old daughter, disappeared from the scene.

The shooting followed a 10-block police pursuit. One suspect, a 41-year-old man, died shortly after arrival at Martin Luther King Jr./Drew Medical Center. The other, said to be in his 30s, was in critical condition awaiting surgery.

Meanwhile, dozens of police officers scoured the area around the shooting scene at 64th Street and Gage Avenue searching for the victims and possibly other suspects. They were backed up by helicopters and search dogs.

Officers would not release the names of either the suspects nor victims nor would they say how much ransom was involved. There were apparently seven or eight shots fired, and the dead man was reportedly hit three times in the head.
