College Roundup : 5 Home Runs Fuel Master’s 13-7 Victory

When the wind blows out at The Master’s College baseball field, balls often do, too.

In a nonleague game that featured six home runs, Master’s outslugged Whittier, 13-7, on the scoreboard and five to one in home runs on a gusty day at Master’s.

Mustangs’ left fielder Darren Beck hit his first two home runs of the season and teammates Mark MacArthur, Dan Bevins and Scott Crowder each homered once.

Master’s senior right-hander Eric Petersen (2-0) went five innings and allowed four runs on four hits to pick up the win.

He walked three and struck out two.

Master’s improved to 6-15-1.

SOFTBALL

Cuesta 10, Pierce 4--Eileen Ramirez pitched a nine-hitter to stop host Pierce in a Western State Conference game.

Agnes Florendo was two for three with three runs batted in for Cuesta (15-8, 2-0).

Andrea Federico, who went the distance for Pierce (5-14, 0-2), was three for three with an RBI.

Moorpark 2, Ventura 0--Audra Olive hit a run-scoring triple in the fifth inning as Moorpark extended its Western State Conference winning streak to 15 with a victory at Ventura.

De Dow (11-3) threw a two-hitter and had nine strikeouts. She did not allow a runner to reach second base.

Canyons 5, Santa Monica 0--Michelle Ruffner pitched a two-hitter with five strikeouts and one walk in a Western State Conference game at Santa Monica.

Ruffner (5-6) did not allow a runner past second base.

Sherrie Holt, who was two for three, doubled to score Michele Wood for Canyons’ first run in the second.

Diana Franklin was two for four for Canyons (5-7, 1-1).

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Pierce d. Westmont, 15-6, 15-7, 15-11--Freshman middle blocker Tony Zapata had 13 kills and four stuff blocks to lead Pierce in a nonconference match at Westmont.

Sophomore middle blocker Mark Grondin also had four stuff blocks for Pierce (8-1).
