Unseeded Phelps Gains Straight-Set Win Over Second-Seeded Sabatini in Florida
Unseeded Terry Phelps upset second-seeded Gabriela Sabatini of Argentina in straight sets Thursday in the second round of a $300,000 women’s tennis tournament.
Phelps, ranked 45th in the world, easily won the first set, 6-2, then held on to win a tiebreaker in the second set to spoil Sabatini’s rally.
Phelps, 22, of Larchmont, N.Y., advanced to the quarterfinal round, where she will meet another surprise winner, Jana Novotna of Czechoslovakia, who ousted eighth-seeded Arantxa Sanchez of Spain, 6-4, 6-1.
Seeded players advancing were No. 3 Chris Evert, No. 4 Helena Sukova of Czechoslovakia, No. 5 Mary Joe Fernandez and No. 7 Helen Kelesi of Canada.
